This Centennial edition, specially designed to commemorate one hundred years of Steinbeck, features french flaps and deckle-edged pages. Of Mice and Men represents an experiment in form, which Steinbeck described as "a kind of playable novel, written in a novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands." A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. They hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. An unlikely pair, George and Lennie, two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression, grasp for their American Dream. Ellie's hysterics eventually leveled out, but not soon enough.Īnother Readable Story About the End of the WorldĪs has been said before, One Second After this is not. Especially in the beginning when all Ellie did was scream and whine. Her depiction of Ellie made me want to gouge out my eardrums with a sharp instrument. Audiobook rating: I lay most of the fault with the experience to the story, but this woman's voice was also very grating. I found little to nothing redeeming about the first part and if it only gets worse from here, then god help me. This is a HUGE reason why I stopped reading. Most dismaying of all, readers seemed to like the first part of the book better than the second part on average. After reading some of the reviews (Goodreads and Audible) more in depth, I think it's because people like part of the book but then hated other parts of it so they kind of gave it a "pity" rating. In fairness, I will admit that I did not finish this book, but I can just tell that this book is going in a direction that I don't want to follow. How could the performance have been better? What was most disappointing about Ilsa J. A better, less annoying story and less annoying characters. |
